Little secrets lie hidden between the lines of books, those that won't change the world but are better left moving under the radar, little gems that are worth uncovering bit by bit. There, between the lines, I discovered that Cortázar was able to feel the pulse of the metal of a spoon by holding it between his fingers, that Salvat-Papasseit was deeply pained by artificial flowers because they had no winter to fear, that for Baudelaire beauty was always strange, that Duras believed that the best way to spend time was by consuming it, that for Nietzsche life without music was a grave mistake and that for Beckett that which we call love was exile (with a post card being sent now and again). And all they confessed between the lines, waiting for someone to re-encounter them with their own words and would feel that miniscule and ingenious emotion of knowing the power of these small-scale secrets.

Books are full of secrets waiting to be discovered. The city as well say René, María and Vito

And keep your eyes peeled to those that we're revealing on Facebook, Twitter and our website.

"...a thousand ways to live the city..." says David Acevedo.

Plaça Odissea

The best of the season in which everything blooms is the proliferation of open air festivals. Spring arrives and so does the festival that the cool guys from Depo put on every year, with an awesome line up, that brings together the best of local pop with some international guests. As was the case with The Raveonettes last year, or like this year with Mojave 3. Thursday there is a concert of the masterful poet Nacho Vegas along with the madness of Maika Makowski. On Friday it's time to dance with Delorean accompanied by party people Massieras and Los Edredón. And finally, Saturday, we can see the Mojave 3 down from the UK together with the frenetic rhythm of The Dodos and locals Litoral and Partido. And all of this in the open air, beside the sea, with a beer in hand, and it's free. What more can you ask for?/ Miriam Arcera Trans. by Rebecca

Penique Productions

There is no other way for me to start but by telling you do not miss this for any reason in the world. Why? Well because the creations of Penique Productions are an experience in themselves, with transformations of space and the textures of enormous quantities of colored plastic. The Barcelona collection that is most dangerous is back in town and consists of an enclosed room containing some scissors, a roll of scotch tape and a fan. Penique Productions has been influenced greatly by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude and appeared in cities such as London and Madrid, and return again to Barcelona, this time in Room B in the Absolute Art Space, which has now been renamed Sala Buit. Starting this Thursday you are all invited to enter this private laminated universe… what happens inside is completely unpredictable./ María Arranz Trans. by Stephanie

Caín & Caín

Artistic creation can have unpredicted beginnings. Two artists who have developed their art in different fields (theatre and dance), found a mutual admiration that brought them together to experiment in collaboration. Following their first efforts in L’animal a l’esquena and Atrás los ojos, they have now launched a joint project “Caín&Caín”. Originated from the bible story, Cain has murdered Abel and is condemned to wander the land. Both actors are Cain, and the fiction within a fiction contemplates their desire to reconstruct possible versions of history. A selection of texts from Beckett, Fellini, Kantor and Pasolini, and some intense choreography make up a powerful performance, interpreted and directed by two genius minds of the stage, Eduard Fernández y Pep Ramis./ Albert T.Riera Trans. by Suky Taylor

Mark Gergis

They're collectors of history, aesthetics, personal memories and, most of all, sounds. Echoes of all these as well as old times packed into flat box. It would be any music fan's dream to sneak into the rooms, filled with records, of collectors like Mark Gergis, the man behind record company Sublime Frequencies and expert on music from Syria, Iraq, Thailand and Cambodia. We won't actually be allowed in there, but in this talk we'll be able to hear a selection of his personal archive. He'll also offer his views on what it means to collect music in the Middle East and South East Asia: logistical problems, contact with other cultures, peculiarities of his collection, the importance the records' format... In all, a perfect occasion to talk about obsessions and nostalgia and, especially, of relaxing and simply listening./ Marta Bausells

Toni Catany

Today is the opening of not only a great exhibition, but also of a fascinating project: Valid Editions, the union between the Valid Foto BCN gallery and ConvincingBlack. The idea has gone from a flash of inspiration to fully developed reality in less than a year, and today it travels a fascinating journey through the world of top quality photography. A challenge that is taken up first by Toni Catany’s Archivo de Sombras, composed of six series of palladiotype and platinotype photographs. This technique has been used by some of the greatest photographers, and Catuny’s work captures the beauty and uniquely delicate texture of shadow in a vast spectrum of tone and light. An ode to the highest ideals of creativity that pays unquestionable homage to past and present art./ Lorena Pedre Trans. by Suky Taylor

Upload Cinema

Once Internet videos were merely a copy of some other thing. Now they're going from the computer straight to the movie theaters, coming to life beyond the "computer" format. They used to say that Internet videos were just little kids falling down, animals doing "human" stuff and Asians humming mainstream American songs. Now people produce their own original material which ends up moving from the small to the big screen. Until now videos found on the Internet simply weren’t TV or movie theater material. Now it’s the cinemas who are looking for them, and it’s TV that’s desperate for them. Before, projection programs looked beyond national borders to cook up cycles featuring foreign films, now they are combing the net to schedule their proposals. A hurrah! for Upload Cinema, who understand how the shots are being called these days. Shall we go check out the "Feel Good" session?/ Descalza Trans. by Nina

Jamm

I have to confess that until recently I knew nothing of this festival Jamm. Luckily, I finally saw the light and found out about the existence of this festival and seeing the quality and quantity of events in a programme of only two days made my mouth water immediately: workshops like the Bestario, music with Bradien, as well as conferences, art installations and projections. The time has come for Art and Technology to get along together, to the envy of Science and Religion. If this were not enough, there will also be video-games waiting patiently for their moment of glory. Anything else? Well I can’t forget the “Verbal Fight between Android and Iphone”. You know that the Jamm is only organised every two years? So if someone comes afterwards to tell you how great it was, you will need a lot of patience for the opportunity to see it another time./ Cronopio Trans. by Kate Howden

Pony Bravo + PS I Love You

When was the first time you heard the story of Little Red Riding Hood? The first time you swam in the sea? The first fight you got in with your sibling? Your first piece of gum, your first test, your first swear word? Don’t put too much effort into this; you're not going to remember. There are things that seem to have always been this way, like the entrance to your grandmas house, the doves in Plaza Catalunya or Pony Bravo. What was there before “El Rayo”? What did we dance before the tribal percussion? This would be a mixture of what you want (Depeche Mode, Radio Futura, the repertoire of the town orchestra and the arrows of Holy Week), but they have built something essential, evocative, beautiful and cross-cultural. Why do they do at least 4 and 5 events from Seville to Barcelona each year? Well because, like Kundera said, “happiness is something you want to repeat”. And we want more./ Bic Cristal Trans. by Stephanie

Festival de Cinema d'Autor

When we found out that BAFF was going to disappear, a lot of us were pretty bummed. Because on those dates we had the pleasure of seeing a different type of cinema; interesting and invisible, giving rise to later debates, beers or G&T's in hand, about what we´d seen that day. Carlos Ríos has eagerly decided to fill the empty space left behind with a new offering almost more alluring than the last. The D’A is based on the concept of authorship to articulate a selection of 60 titles, a mix of feature-length and short films, divided under the headings: Àsies, Direccions, Promeses de l’Est and la Retrospectiva. Sacred names such as Maddin, Kitano, Herzog and Oliveira, and new values emanating from every corner of the world, will be acting as master of ceremonies at this new, and for cinephiles, unmissable night./ Santi Gila Saurat Trans. by Kate Bell

Music e-motion

Movement is shown by walking. Or dancing. This is why its so difficult to write or talk abut music, because music is an art, and as such, provokes emotion. And we already know that describing emotions is something that's rather tricky. Because of this, because music and dance are elements of action and emotion, we have "music e-motion" a day in which these two arts come together. The project, brought together by Niu, supported by dance company Erre que Erre who will present the show "No sólo (de neuronas vive el cerebro enamorado)" a work about the complexity of falling in love and the feelings felt when this happens. There will also be a projection of dance videos, with “DIVADLO” & “A.P.A.A.I.” directed by Guillem Morales. So as we're feeling lost for words about emotion, we'll have to discover them.../ Miriam Arcera Trans. by Rebecca

Roger Bernat

“Odd folk” are part of life’s rich tapestry, and every era has one or two characters that stand out. When we talk about Nijinsky, he was not so much weird, but he took the creative reins and choreographed ballets which slew boundaries and stirred controversy. Subsequently his audiences experienced the futuristic, new direction of modern dance as early as the WWI era. Sexual, scandalous and hugely talented, his choreography still turns heads today. You lucky lot, you can celebrate the International day of Dance and see it all for yourselves down at the Mercat de Flors where Roger Bernat has created a new version of “The Rite of Spring” based on the Wuppertal version with the original Stravinsky music. Paris is Burning (V.O.)

A documentary that is used as a point of reference in cultural studies, gender studies and dance classes, a pioneer of what has been given the name “New Queer Cinema”. A documentary that goes from a part of the New York dance culture of the 80's, to that of the gays, Latinos and African Americans and members of the transgender community, and depicts the daily battles against homophobia, racism and poverty. This documentary has been extensively criticized by some activists and by its own protagonists in the film which have in turn ended in economic disputes with the director. Be that as it may be, ”Paris is burning “ is essential to see and difficult to find in the current cultural grill, so take advantage and be sure to see it in Espacio Practico where they have scheduled it as a tribute to the dance on its big day. ./ María Arranz Trans. by Stephanie

Not to be confused with some Hollywood B-movie, “Camping Caníbal” is definitely not for the feint hearted, and you’d be wrong in thinking that the Eat Meat Gallery is gonna serve you up a “typical” slice of artistic expression. Nico Nubiola is without a doubt one of the darkest and most macabre talents Spain has to offer, and he will be presenting his first exhibition in Barna from today. You will have the pleasure of viewing his anthropological experiment of carved up corpses with missing limbs protruding from wall sculptures somewhat characteristic of cannibalism. The mutilated human bodies apparently aren’t a morbid or unearthly form of expression; it’s all quite “normal”. All sounds a little Twin Peaks to me, go find out for yourself, and watch out for the one armed man./ Lorena Pedre Trans. by Kat

They grab their bikes and park them where the Chinese have taken their slice of Barcelona. They wait for the guys who love to get one over on Time looking for treasures that, before being abandoned, will be reborn. And once they´re there, they´ll have a peek at a shirt that buttons up in the back and some Marc Jacobs' edition Vans. They´ll buy a skirt to wear like a dress, a travel bag that´s perfect for their gym stuff, some jeans they can customise into shorts, and a snazzy jumper to give to their old man when the cold returns. In between all this excitement, they´ll have a veggie hot dog (yup, veggie, the ones at The Dog is Hot are amazing) and to finish off they´ll go back to unchain their bikes, laden with new (but old) stuff. Hit Me With Music

vI spent Easter Week on the beach, sunbathing and going on some boat trips. A friend gave me nightmares talking about a documentary on Animal Planet that speculated about the existence of mermaids. Today is Monday, (though of course, by the time you read this it will be closer to the weekend) and I was thinking about how good the holidays were, and I needed something to help me forget those damned mermaids. And then came an invitation to the premiere of “Hit me with music”, a mix of my heavenly Easter week with a week of documentaries from In-Edit. Is there anything cooler than dancehall? Tell me what and I will show you a bit more dancehall. The documentary shows us what music and dance means in the life of Jamaicans. And they are real music lovers. Jeniferever

I first heard about Jeniferever through Mews. Mews are a Danish group who have made beautiful progressive pop records (to call it that) and they are well known in north Europe but it has taken them some years to reach these parts. (If they have been here before, I haven’t heard about it) .They are Swedish, and are like Mogwai with a predilection for vocal melodies. Which is so cool. Jeniferever make songs in which the beginning and the end are not important but what matters is what happens in the middle, the icy warmth, the Nordic instinct that influences all their notes, the distant emotion. Songs that make you levitate. Tonight, also, they're accompanied by Her Only Presence which will be a sweet moment. Good. Good. Good./ Iu Peña Trans. by Kate Howden

Even in timeless cities criss-crossed with canals, time doesn't stand still. Tom Trago is one of the hot young talents who took shape in the crucible of sound, record-store and label “Rush Hour” in Amsterdam. His debut EP as well as the joint venture Yuro & Trago showed House with B-boy mentality and the necessary brashness. His second record “Iris” was released only a few weeks ago and is the consequent advancement of this attitude paired with a superb musical taste and maybe a pinch of Ed-Banger. Nurtured in the bosom of the extraordinary “Rush Hour” he's developed into one of the assets of the cities' musical treasure trove and with that in mind his gig in Barcelona has all it takes to make the dancefloor at BeCool run over./ Christian Schärmer

No 3D. No astronomical budget. No stars with exorbitant salaries. No special effects, nor emotional traps, no stories to keep you awake at night. This is "Bebés", a fresh, simple, original and adorably contagiously positive addition to the cinema listings. Set to receive yet more accolades, such as it's nomination for the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards, this French film presents the story of four babies born in the four corners of the world; in Namibia, Japan, Mongolia and California. Large doses of charm and a production team unlike any other- the 'maestro' Bruno Coulais, Craig McKay (Oscar nominee for his film "Reds" and "The Silence of the Lambs") in a fascinating flick, full of fun and surprises./ Eva A. One thing I love about programmers (be they promoters, in halls, festivals, or those that organize concerts) is that they have musician friends who, in time, become regulars at many the soirée. At Heilogàbal things are no different. Stanley Brinks is one of them; Mishima tend to be with their Christmas concerts (despite selling out in 2 minutes flat) as is Bart Davenport who is part of the furniture at this Gracia bar come rain or shine, night or day. He knows it well himself; he says this is where his music is taken seriously and truly appreciated. But who's surprised? Think about wood, think about metal (V.O.)

Manon de Boer premières Think about wood, think about metal, the third portrait in a trilogy which tries to (re)construct the climate of the 70s from the experiences of 3 characters, in different cities. First it was the pop icon Sylvia Kristel; followed by the always superb Suely Rolnik; and now comes the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky, who interweaves fragments of her life with memories of her relationship with John Cage, flashes of Cologne’s cultural agitation and musical improvisations that evoke a zero degree in music, nearly primal. Memory, silences, zeitgeist, voices, empty streets, rhythm, fists, metal and wood: de Boer knits an essay in which musical performance becomes the method and the object, sound punctuates images and voices, and the cinematographic reveals itself as transparent. Sounds brilliant./ Julia Morandeira

Stephan Spicher

And suddenly, a pure state of colour, as spring blooms, a time of transformation and new vitality, an urge for change that fills our minds with 1001 new ideas, which like the soft breeze, will waft away into the sky. But not always... just sometimes a project enters the unknown and becomes an abstract formula, a pure illustration or an expressionist articulation that blooms like the work of Stephan Spicher. A play on tonality that creates moulds for invisible energy, for expressionism, for the hidden aspects of the most intriguing notions. His work focuses on the natural, on uniquely recreating itself in the mundane, on imprinting a vision that takes us to a parallel world, a paradise to be explored that only needs to be discovered./ Beatriz Corral Trans. by Suky Taylor

Owen Pallett

Call me a freak but I'm still left with a bit of the adolescent addiction to video games and every time I hear the name Final Fantasy I start to feel a I don't know what of which I am not particularly proud. But no, I will get over it, and yes if Owen Pallett left his artists name (Final Fantasy) behind precisely to avoid these coincidences, I too can do it. Above all this is him and his violin, the man and his majestic strings, him and his experience composing arrangements for groups such as Arcade Fire, Beirut, and even Pet Shop Boys. And on top of all this, even, is his music, which as often happens, has everything and nothing to do with his fame. His songs are much more than string arrangements, but at the same time they couldn't exist without them. Owen is a magician. Not only of the violin, not only of music, not only music but of life. Think Russian, strong like a bull while sweating bullets in a concrete circus studio framed with trapezes, ropes and high bars. This is where for one grueling hour trainer Leo Cavallo leads, with tough love through a series of stretches and repetition, exercises accompanied by bell shaped weights of 8 to 48 kg called kettlebells. Taking its fundamentals from the routines followed by Russian shot putters and gymnasts, kettlebells is a workout that manages to be graceful, hardcore and addictive at the same time. Secrets and dreams of... Carlos Ríos

After years heading the Cine Ambigú and the BAFF, I closed an era and I launched the creation of the Festival de Cinema D’Autor de Barcelona, which is bringing to the city a heavy-hitting offering of independent cinema. Are these strange days for setting up a film festival? For sure, but there's the desire for cinema without labels, without being categorized by genres or geography. A festival that offers the proposals of decorated authors and takings risks with new ones. Do independent films get a bad rap? That depends. Independent “art” films have been given a stigma they don't deserve. The D'A 2011 helps better understand the concept of authorship with examples of the best contemporary cinema, which is a balance between the award-winning yet invisible films and the most daring and unexplored. Is there an indie and art film scene here? Yes, and the proof is in the “Autoría Catalana” section we have, with offerings from producers that take chances and go far outside the commercial boundaries. A dream... that digital would be definitively established for a better and immediate enjoyment of contemporary cinema. A secret... I'm stunned when I find myself face to face with directors of movies that moved me. My way of getting access to them is by screening their films. Interview by: Santi Gila Saurat. Photo: Amets Iriondo
