Not Modern Love, or Modern Life, we're looking forward to Modern Wife. Since the Twitter account for the upcoming Modern Wife, Modern Life exhibit was posted, the social history loving geeks in us have been counting down the days until it opens. This week, they put a shout out for 1960s sewing and knitting patterns, and it reminded us of the success that the Little Museum of Dublin has had in crowdsourcing historical primary sources, which are crucial in documenting social history. So raid your stash of patterns pilfered from your mam, because it's our duty to see our mams and nans lives represented in this historical exhibit, alongside the gas magazines they read, with their elaborate tips and tricks for leading an economical good-wife life - for instance, rub the soles of your shoes with potato to give them starchy grip, whaaaa? Read More   Jocelyn Murray Boyne We chatted with Jocelyn Murray Boyne, fashion designer and photographer, whose work recently featured in ID2015's In The Fold Ireland has a history of great craftsmanship that I think influences and enhances all of our creative industries. As a designer I like to work through ideas very fast. While I sketch and enjoy tactile work, I find drawing and illustration too slow as a process. Photography  was the perfect tool that I had at my disposal to collect ideas whether it be textures, shapes or colours that I was inspired by. Now, photography has grown to mean something beyond a design tool. It has introduced me to a way of thinking and considering my surroundings that I think design sometimes can't provide alone. While design can be quite focused and insular work, photography has a way of opening yourself up to your environment which I think is necessary to feed creativity. In five years time, I would like to be working with a team of creative people not just designers, but artists and writers as well. I would like my work to be interdisciplinary as I am interested and enjoy working in many creative fields. In X+Y director Morgan Matthews does not skirt around the issue, and symptoms of the condition course through the film: the camera focuses in on patterns and symmetry, mathematics becomes a secondary language, and social anxiety is at the forefront. The film finds Nathan (Asa Butterfield) fighting for a place on the British team at the international mathematics Olympiad, as he comes to terms with a tragedy in his past and the social limitations of his condition. Sally Hawkins portrays a distressed mother, as is her wont. Heavy themes of bereavement and loneliness are likely to make many cinema goers run for the hills, but it would be a shame to miss such a heartwarming tale about growth that does not dwell on limitations but rather the manner in which they are circumvented in the face of all-important love. / Ben Allen   March 26 2015 where The Science Gallery, Trinity College, Pearse Street, Dublin 2 01 896 4091‎ Location Map when 6:30pm how much €10 workshop Turn Your Head Into A Speaker Have you ever had the overwhelming urge to listen to music through your teeth? The Science Gallery has teamed up with TOG hackerspace for a seminar on how to transform your own head in to a completely silent skull radio. You’ll learn how use vibrations and basic soldering techniques to make your noggin in to your own personal subwoofer. Well, Sleater-Kinney aren't just pretty good in spite of their gender, but from riot girrl beginnings to their current status as arguably the best rock band in the world, it has fuelled their vivacious approach to rock. They are progressive punks who wear cool, trendy dresses, but sing themselves hoarse with primal refrains on their latest offering, No Cities To Love. Reports from their gigs in London and Manchester suggest that the performance will be pseudo-religious, as they reunite after almost decade apart, which, considering the universal acclaim of No Cities To Love, and their introduction to a new, younger audience willing to celebrate their brand of feminism. This is one altar you should be bustling to bow before. / Kate Coleman   March 26 2015 where Cineworld, Parnell Street, D1 Location Map when See HERE how much See HERE jdiff Force Majeure Force Majeure, which you could plausibly re-title "Michael Haneke's Ski Vacation", was directed by a Swede, Ruben Ostlund, but shares the great Austrian filmmaker's dim view of human nature. Set in an oddly menacing French ski resort, an Overlook-esque assemblage of pine boxes and gleaming machinery, the film centres on a picture-perfect family who find their carefully constructed domestic life turned on its head after an unexpected act of fatherly cowardice. Shot in a series of exquisitely framed static tableaux, with the director's pitiless camera lingering over very pained grimace and uncomfortable silence, the film is an expertly controlled exercise in rising tension that dissects the fundamental weirdness of our holiday rituals with some aplomb. A blackly comic tour de force. / Conor McDevitt   March 26 2015 where Copper House Gallery, Off Synge Street, Dublin 8 when Until 27 March how much Free exhibition Quietude A series of soothing and minimalist photographs, Maggy Morrissey captures Irish seascapes and scenes from her travels around Europe. The muted shots of the Dublin seaside have delicate and unexpected pops of colour, honing in on details you might normally skip over. The shot of the vibrant red top of the Howth lighthouse is particularly satisfying. Definitely worth getting yourself out of whatever crazed weather we’re having (it is literally hailing as I write this) to zen out and spend the rest of your day with a dreamier disposition. / Olivia Rutter   March 26 2015 where The Workman's Club, 10 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2. Location Map when 8pm how much €5 before 8:30, €8 after birthday party GoldenBeck Birthday Show GoldenBeck is like, one year old, so it is grasping on to its youth by celebrating with gigs that put cool, young music to the forefront. This gig will see the luminous Loah take to the stage - she's a writer and performer who looks like a consumate pop-star, but actually has oodles of cross-genre talent, which is refreshing in this music-by-numbers age. She will be joined by Stomptown Brass, who have the kind of energy that'll make you dance in technicolour, and also, Bunk, who channel the sixties with a Motown vibe that'll send you into a two-step, click, two-step, click, groove... / Kate Coleman   March 27 2015 where DIT Grangegorman, Room RD003, Rathdown House when 3:30pm how much Free talk Typeography Ireland: Annie Atkins + James Kelleher Design communities all over the world are becoming more accessible to non-designers - just look at Font Sunday on Twitter, for instance. Here, Typography Ireland does a stellar job of putting together events for the design community, but equally, anyone with an interest in design. Their latest event will see Annie Atkins (you know lead graphic designer on Grand Budapest Hotel? Yeah, you know.) and James Kelleher of Pilcrow speak. Annie will be elaborating on designing for film, which isn't always recognising the vision of an auteur like Wes Anderson, but is often more about creating a world for actors to inhabit, to help them get over the weird studio atmosphere. James on the other hand, will be delivering a rousing speech defending the pursuit of magazine publishing. Location Map when 8pm how much €12.50 gig Cloud Castle Lake At a time that you can't move for brushing your ears off the sweet sounds of an amazing Irish band, Cloud Castle Lake are standing out for sounding, well, not really like any other of the amazing Irish bands. Having announced themselves as a somewhat rough but intriguing presence in our midst a few years ago, they vanished like the wan sun of a still March day into a cloud of obscurity, only to return triumphantly 6 months ago armed with their debut EP Synch - a gloriously glacial mix of Thom Yorke - esque falsettos and broken beats. Live they are a mesmerising tour de force - my socks are still orbiting the moon having been blown off at an incredible show at HWCH, so I will be front and centre for this one, come join me. / Emmet Condon   March 27 2015 where St. Stephen's Church, Mount Street when 7pm how much €12 (inc. EP) album launch Basciville Soulful, folksy and a little bit bluesy Basciville's EP is a promising debut release that could not be better suited to the gorgeous Georgian, Pepper Cannister Church. Compiled of Wexford natives and brothers Cillian (on main vocals), Lorcan and a few more local pals, Basciville have been gigging around Dublin and Ireland now for a while, leaving listeners impressed - whether they'd gone intentionally to see them, or happened to fortunately end up at an open mike featuring their original music. On the new 5 track EP, Blues In Red, Basciville shows a range, of more emotive soul to more upbeat infectious tunes, perfect for starting your weekend. Support comes from the equally soothing Ailbhe Reddy and other surprise guests yet to be announced. / Niamh Keenan   March 27 2015 where Wood Quay Venue, Dublin City Council Civic Office Building, Dublin 8 Location Map when 6:30pm how much €5 donation to Marriage Equality fundraiser Pride Vigil As the Marriage Equality referendum draws closer, we are finding ourselves in a web of brilliant grass roots events that are partying for equality - raising money at gigs, nightclubs, or with brunches and yoga, it can be easy to become blasé about the levity of the cause. It is 32 years verdict in the Declan Flynn murder trial was delivered. His murderers since people in support of equality first marched, united, after the gross walked free because Justice Sean Gannon deemed them as having been attempting only to protect the park from gay people. After the murderers held a victory parade in Fairview Park, where he was killed, the LGBT community and its allies responded with their own march. Location Map when 7:30pm how much €19 gig Booka Brass Band Admittedly I'm pretty late to the Booka Brass Band Party. I first saw them at Electric Picnic last year as stand ins for FKA Twigs. Usually such a substitute for a festival act I'd been waiting to see for months would be a slap in the face, but it was anything but. Booka Brass Band seem to be built for the festival circuit. Sets are chocked with bright, storming covers of all the radio friendly pop that everybody secretly enjoys and the bands overwhelming presence gives the tracks a whole new character. Of course Booka Brass Band are much more than summer festival covers. As 'BBB' demonstrates, the band's own tracks inhabit a space very much of their own, sitting somewhere between Phil Spector type wall of sound soul records and Mr Scruff. Mix it all together with the bands excellent showmanship and you have the perfect recipe for a great night out. Location Map when 8pm how much €10/€12 album launch Inni-K The shoots of an Irish spring awakening are clearly evident on this bouncy folk pop debut by Inni-K. Steeped in the mythical but with a swirl of the now, Eithne NiChatháin confidently explores her culture and musical heritage across these 12 tracks. Enlisting a brilliant ensemble of musicians such as Brian Walsh and Seán Mac Erlaine under the watchful production eye of Stephen Shannon, The King Has Two Horse's Ears is crafted to expose depth and beauty within the tracks. It plaits Gaeilge into the jaunty 'Find Your Beat' but elsewhere the short narratives woven by Inni-K gently intrigue and benefit from sub 4 minute brevity also. A shout out too to the gorgeous album artwork by M&E. In her own words, this is very much "Born in this land, at this time". It’s not the 90s anymore, but isn’t it fun to pretend? Oh for a time when humans and cartoon characters lived in harmony together! When Michael Jordan became a household name in Ireland not for his athleticism but for his acting chops! Space Jam helped me to discover my love of basketball, a phase that lasted 4 years and 2 ‘Hotshots’ summer camps in Rathfarnam. This dream was eventually shattered by the realisation that I was a chubby white Irish kid who would never be able to slam dunk, irrespective of how much R Kelly inspired me to believe in the possibility. Regardless, Bugs and Mike dared us to dream, and for that they must never be forgotten. And what better way to celebrate the greatest half live-action half animation sports movie of all time than with a barbecue and a guest set from DJ Space Dimension Controller? / Ben Allen   March 28 2015 where Theatre Upstairs, Above Lanigan's Pub, Eden Quay, Dublin 1 when 1pm/7pm how much €10 theatre Mother May I Claire (Ranae Von Meding) sits alone on a black and white room, the floor and backdrop mirroring each other with black and white crosses. There are hundreds of pint glasses with varying degrees of water, custard creams suspended from the ceiling, a pair of heels that you might find abandoned on Harcourt Street on a Sunday morning and, a bible. Claire leads us through her life up till now, in a monologue interspersed with statistics and unexpected music. It becomes apparent that she isn’t standing in a room at all, but possibly in her own mind. A very intimate and intense story examining religion, compulsion, control and what people do to get themselves up in the morning. / Olivia Rutter   March 28 2015 where Bar Tengu, Great Grand Street, Dublin 1 when 9pm-3am how much €10/€12.99 dj set Out to Lunch - DJ Traxx Adding a new flavour to the staple beat spots is Out to Lunch. What's it all about? "Good DJs playing long sets". Simples. Oh but there's also the Hunt and Gather crew on decor duties, Richard Brophy doing a 9pm interview with Traxx before he settles on the decks for 4 hours. oh an upstairs in Ping Pong, there's Yamamori food for the peckish and super solid sounds from Simon Conway, Morgan Buckley & Lolz + Lambo. As for Traxx, well he hails from Chicago (Nation Records) and channels the spirit of Larry Heard and Ron Hardy through his house vibes and his own 'jakbeat' sound. He's clocked in his Boiler Room sessions. Location Map when Until 14 July how much Free exhibition Seven Treasures Despite growing up in London, I never went to the Victoria and Albert museum until I reached adulthood. For some reason, my mother always assumed that she had taken me, but in fact, she was just Groundhog Day-ing on the times she had taken my sisters over ten years previously. Bad Mam. Luckily, the mountain has finally come to Mohamed, and the Chester Beatty Library is hosting a snapshot of the V&A's extensive collection of oriental objets d'arte. Seven Treasures is an opportunity to see Japanese cloisonné enamels from after 1840, when this art of manufacture was revived. Expect beautiful objects, in all the precious colours one associates with mineral wealth, and a sense of awe at the craft, talent and attention to detail paid by long-departed, far-flung craftspeople. / Kate Coleman   March 30 2015 where Light House Cinema , Smithfield Market, Dublin 7 Location Map when See HERE how much See HERE cinema The Voices  The Voices tells the story of Gerry (Reynolds) who blunders through his life in Milton, MA (Middle America), working at the bath factory and trying to score a date with the lovely, if uninterested and Carry-On-style-British Fiona (Gemma Arterton) who works in accounts to the chagrin of Lisa, also accounts, who actually quite fancies him. Gerry seems like a nice enough guy to Fiona, but he’s just a bit dull. Little does she know, he has pets who he has conversations with (a dog in a slow, Southern drawl and a cat, in a voice like David Tennant’s if he were a baddie) and a mind that takes murder orders from road kill. The film is a black comedy, with lots of border-line cheesy gore, some familiar faces and a fairly decent soundtrack. Think slasher movie meets Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, a Carry-On film and a smidgen of Donny Darko. / Frida Kilburn   March 31 2015 where Workman's Club, 10 Wellington Quay D2 Location Map when 8pm how much €15 gig A Place to Bury Strangers We’ve been to hear these guys play many times. We make a point of it. We’ve seen them in Barcelona when their electrifying attack seemed to singe the night air like a lightning strike. We blagged ourselves into Death by Audio for a midnight show in that legendary lair that was their rehearsal space for more than a decade. That decrepit Brooklyn garage is now set to become the new HQ for Vice Media. This is now the way of things. The band say that they have moved on but on the evidence of Transfixiation, their fourth record, they haven’t moved too far out of the neighbourhood. This is a good thing. All of the pieces are there - the propulsive percussion, the coruscating waves of relentless feedback, the barely-there vocals. That humming noise the day after, it’s all in your head. / Mr & Mrs Stevens   April 01 2015 where National Print Museum, Old Garrison Chapel, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4 Location Map when Until 18 April how much Free exhibition Exquisite Editions If you have ever felt the urge to google 'How do you know if you're a bibliophile', I can save you the effort of pressing enter, because dude, you're the definition. Do you buy multiple editions of classics because of the designs on the sleeves? Do you take page discolouration into account when colour-coding your stash? You are textbook. Exquisite Editions at the National Print Museum has been curated by Jamie Murphy at the Salvage Press, where they produce achingly beautiful volumes themselves. However, they aren't navel-gazing, so you can expect to smell that book-specific scent emanating from editions by international publishers as well as our own leading lights, because a book isn't just a bunch of words on some pages.
